New BSc projects on flood and salinity tolerance of wild rice

Our glasshouse is teeming with activity! BSc thesis students are growing species of wild rice as well as a number of African cultivars (mostly crossings between Oryza sativa and Oryza glaberrima). We have had issues with the temperature in the glasshouse but heating and ventilation now seem to be working well.

It is long time ago since all tables have been occupied but a mixture of sand/soil cultures and hydroponics has taken up most of the available space. The plants in sand/soil cultures will be used for submergence stress with emphasis on gas film retention time. It will be exciting to see if some of the wild species perform better than the cultivars of Oryza sativa which have been tested so far.

The African crossing will be exposed to salinity stress. We have develop a brand new protocol to assess the importance of the barrier to radial oxygen loss as a possible barrier to salt exclusion.
