One of our wild rice species is now flowering

Oryza granulata is one of the species that Johan tried to grow as part of his MSc thesis work. However, only 2 out of approx. 100 seeds germinated so we have spent the past two months separating tillers in order to obtain enough experimental material for the many measurements we have planned. I am not sure why, but now most of the plants are flowering – it could be a stress response or perhaps they are just happy.

Regardless of the reason, Tong is now charactering ROL barrier strength, tissue porosity, respiration, radial water loss and apoplastic barrier using periodic acid staining. Yesterday, we completed the MicroResp measurements and it was a great learning experience for Tong as well as for Song.

We have high expectations to Oryza granulata since this is a dryland species according the world-wide distribution obtained from Gbif. Who knows if it will behave differently from the many wetland species that we have characterized so far?...
